The Pattern I Kept Finding

Before I met my husband, I spent several years single.

During that time, I kept finding myself in the same relationship pattern.

Different person.

Same ending.

That was when I discovered attachment theory.

The framework gave me language for something I had been living for years. I learned that my default tendency was anxious attachment, and I began to see that I was repeatedly drawn to partners who were more avoidant.

More importantly, I started changing my own side of the dance.

I got clearer about my needs.

I practiced communicating them.

I stopped avoiding hard conversations.

I learned that feeling anxious didn't automatically mean something was wrong.

Over time, something shifted.

Eventually, I met my husband.

Our relationship isn't perfect, because no relationship is. But it is secure in a way I didn't know how to create when I was younger.

There are still moments when old fears show up.

The difference is that they no longer run the relationship.

Looking back, attachment theory wasn't valuable because it gave me a label.

It was valuable because it helped me recognize a pattern.

And once I could see the pattern, I could begin changing it.
