Love Is a Choice

Years ago, a mentor told me something that stayed with me.

She had been married for more than thirty years and said that even now, she wakes up each day and chooses to love her husband.

At the time, I found that idea surprisingly comforting.

We often talk about love as something that happens to us.

We fall in love.

We fall out of love.

The language makes love sound accidental, as though we're being carried by a current we can't control.

But my mentor offered a different perspective.

What if love is less like falling and more like choosing?

Not a single choice made once.

A choice made again and again.

In ordinary moments.

Through attention.

Through kindness.

Through showing up.

The longer I live, the more I appreciate that idea.

Feelings come and go.

Life changes.

People change.

But there is something powerful about remembering that love can also be an action.

A practice.

A choice we continue making.
